Poongar rice is one among the traditional rice and is also called Women's rice. This can grow with less water and is flood tolerant too. This rice is ideal to make Soft Idlies apart from preparing Dosa and other rice preparations.

Benefits:

2. It helps cure most of the women’s hormonal issues and also improves overall body strength & immunity.
3. If consumed during pregnancy it leads to normal vaginal delivery.
4. This Rice is good for lactating mothers too. It gives strength to the body. 

Soaking Required for making Rice: 6 -12 hrs.
Water: 1:3 cup

Recipes:

1. Red Rice Idli / Dosa batter:

Ingredients:
Any one of the Kaadu Red Rice - 1 Kg
Kaadu Urad Dal - 200 gm
Fenugreek - 1 teaspoon
Any one of the Kaadu Red Rice Poha - 1 cup (if needed only)

Preparation:
Soak the rice for 2-3 hrs. and urad dal for 1 hr separately. Soak fenugreek seeds also along with urad dal. Grind them to make the batter and leave it for a time for fermentation of 5-6 hours. Now the batter is ready.


2. Red Rice Idiyappam / Puttu / Kozhukattai(Dumplings)

Ingredients
Any one of the Kaadu Red Rice 
1 cup rice flour or 130 grams of rice flour
¼ teaspoon salt or add as required
¼ cup fresh grated coconut - optional

Preparation:
Clean the rice using water and air dry it. Roast the dried rice. Mill the rice to a finer powder for making Idiyappam / Kozhukattai. For making Puttu, Mill the rice to a coarser granule.
Put a pot in the oven and pour water. Add salt & ghee to the hot water and mix well. Pour the rice flour into a wide bowl and pour a little bit of boiled water mix in it and knead. When the flour comes to the state where you can make idiyappam, add it to the idiyappam axis and squeeze it on the idli plate. Then, steam for 8 to 10 minutes to prepare Idiyappam. Add Kaadu Cane Jaggery Powder to coconut milk and serve.
